Teens Explore Peace, Prosperity Through Art, Writing

“Connecting communities for peace and prosperity” was the theme of the 2015 Young Authors and Artists Showcase, an annual activity of the Santa Clarita Sister Cities Program and SCV International Program.

A total of 139 local artists, poets and essayists between the ages of 13 and 18 participated in this year’s competition. Winners were announced Thursday evening in a ceremony emceed by Mayor Marsha McLean at Santa Clarita City Hall.

In the art competition, which drew 58 entries, the Blue Ribbon went to “A Better World” by Matt Rubinowitz, a 10th grader from SCVi Charter School.

Tying for second place in art were a work titled “Giving Will Grow Wonderful Things” by Abby Gutske, a homeschool student, and “Friends Around the World” by Ella Niederhauser of SCVi Charter.

The winner of the heaviest category at 65 entries – best essay – was Grace Lim of Academy of the Canyons for her piece titled “A Spark of Peace.”

Second place went to Saugus High School’s Katherine Morsch for her essay, “First Steps Toward Peace.”

Jordan Brackin of Bowman High School won the poetry category for his work, “Tranquil.”

Second place in poetry went to Raenah Alagrabli of Saugus High for “Carnations.”

The first-place winning entries advance to a national Sister Cities competition.

 

About the SCV International Program

The Santa Clarita Valley International Program (SCVIP) is a local nonprofit organization focused on the promotion of international goodwill and cultural understanding between the people of Santa Clarita and citizens of international cities and countries.

SCVIP was founded by Carl Boyer, past mayor of Santa Clarita. The dedication of its board members, together with the support and active participation of community members, continues to bring about positive changes in today’s developing world.

 

Santa Clarita Sister Cities Program

Santa Clarita develops and maintains international Sister City relationships in the major areas of interest to its citizens with a model that is self-sufficient and sustainable, resulting in a community that is globally aware. The city of Santa Clarita has two formal International Sister City relationships with Tena, Ecuador, and Sariaya, Philippines.

SCVIP and Sister Cities Programs include medical missions, youth ambassadors, sister schools, education, arts and culture, and international travel.
