Saugus High School Unveils New Makerspace

Dignitaries, administrators, teachers and students were on hand Friday at Saugus High School where a brand new Makerspace was unveiled to the community.

The 3,000-square foot facility is part of the school’s four-year Engineering Pathway that allows students to design, engineer and build projects using advanced manufacturing. The curriculum is part of Project Lead the Way.

“The new Makerspace facility on campus will empower students to learn through a variety of hands-on exploratory activities,” said Saugus Principal Bill Bolde. “It will combine traditional labs, shops, and classroom atmospheres that allow kids to imagine with their minds and create with their hands. This is truly 21st Century learning at its finest and we are so pleased to see such tremendous support from the business community to make this a reality for Saugus High School.”

Equipment for the Makerspace was purchased using funds from the California Career Pathway Trust grant. SMTCL Americas also donated one of the featured pieces – CNC milling equipment that will enable both Advanced Manufacturing Pathway students as well as other non-pathway students (working on approved projects) to produce professional quality metal parts.

“This equipment will also allow students in the final phases of the Advanced Manufacturing Pathway to acquire realistic, highly-in-demand-by-industry skills that can be used to secure employment in the manufacturing sector,” said Tom Mataya, engineering teacher at Saugus.

The Engineering Pathway has a goal of becoming K-14. The program already exists at Arroyo Seco Junior High, which feeds directly into Saugus’s program. Beyond that the partnership includes College of the Canyons, with the goal to reach further down into the elementary schools. The goal is to connect kids with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and prepare them for post-secondary education and the workforce.
