Caltrans News Flash: Last Bay Bridge Truss Removed

In this Caltrans News Flash, Bay Bridge spokesperson, Leah Robinson-Leach takes you behind the scenes to show you how the last Old Bay Bridge Truss to be lowered and removed with tremendous precision, is having a historical and nostalgic impact. She speaks with Chief Bay Bridge Engineer, Brian Maroney on the money-saving project that is ahead of schedule. She also speaks with Bay area resident, Richard Heinemann whose father worked on the construction of the Old Bay Bridge.

The removal of the high steel of the Old Bay Bridge has required as much planning and precision as the building of the Bridge in the 1930s. Nineteen trusses in all, one hundred million pounds of steel, have now been removed, visibly changing the views in the Bay. Passersby on the bike path of the new east span can view the unobstructed panoramic views of the Bay, in every direction, particularly the SAS Tower of the new east span.
