Hundreds of Women Help Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley held its 8th Annual Women’s Build Saturday in Santa Clarita Valley. Over 300 women from all over the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys ages 16 to 60 and beyond donned their pink hard hats, rolled up their sleeves and set to work helping to build homes for 24 low-income veterans and their families.

This build is to help complete the third phase of a CalVet REN (Residential Enriched Neighborhood), following the Homes 4 FamiliesTM (H4F) Enriched Neighborhood® model — which empowers veteran families to build homes and futures — hence H4F has dubbed it the WE BuildTM (Women’s Empowerment Build).

Sponsored by Lowes, A-1 Party, Andy Gump, Bagel Boyz, Force Protector Gear, Jersey Mike’s, Burrtec, Boston Scientific, LM Women With Wrenches, PDC Healthcare, Soroptomist Santa Clarita, TEAM Referral Network, Team Rubicon, WAM, Watt Companies, and Women of Syska, the event is part of an amazing tradition for the organization, bringing together, empowering and celebrating women and female veterans.

Habitat estimates that over 1,800 labor hours were donated to construction of the final 24 homes of a 78-home veteran Enriched Neighborhood® the organization has been building over the last decade. Almost 150 families have already moved into their homes, with over 70 of them being veterans. Jobs accomplished at the event included fencing, drainage ditches, stucco, sidewalks and curbs.

This local Habitat affiliate uses an Enriched Neighborhood® model developed by its sister organization, Homes 4 FamiliesTM because in addition to providing homes, the organization offers a powerful outcome-based program of wrap-around services and education that enables under-served families to build equity, self-sufficiency skills, and advocacy capacity to move themselves up in socio-economic status. For veterans and their military families, these wrap-around services are enhanced with much-needed trauma-informed programs and services to address PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma, Traumatic Brain Injury and other issues.

Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys’ mission is to build affordable homes for low-income civilian and veteran families, and provide services that empower them to build brighter futures as homeowners. They are a locally run, independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization service North Los Angeles City and County, building houses and futures for low-income families. This Habitat affiliate specializes in building Enriched Neighborhood® communities which hold the promise to move low-income families up into the middle class and have built 320 homes to date. Homes For FamiliesTM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving low-income families through the development and replication of the Enriched Neighborhood® model. This model offers a powerful outcome-based program of wraparound services and education that empowers underserved families to build equity, self-sufficiency skills and advocacy capacity to move themselves up in socio-economic status.
