The Hollywood movie scene is filled with films from American directors and most movie goers get to see these on the big screen. But there is a world of movies out there from international directors that are worth the watch that don’t get the same recognition and exposure as domestic titles.
College of the Canyons offers a way to bridge the gap between the domestic and international films by putting on the International Film Festival on campus that showcases foreign directors and their films. Headed by COC professor Pierre Etienne, the International Film Festival has been running at COC for over 10 years, and has been successfully introducing students to new directors from around the world. If you don’t mind reading subtitles and are interested in how the world sees film outside of Tensile Town then the International Film Festival is a great place to start opening your horizons. The film festival also aims to promote interest in foreign languages at COC and Etienne believes the themes and dialogue may actually help students learn. There is also a Q & A with the professors and other presenters where students can discuss topics that relate to the film and its origins. Be sure visit to the Hasley Hall theater tomorrow at 7 p.m. where you can catch the Spanish film, “Todo Sobre Mi Madre.”
