Gibbon Conservation Center

The GCC is a
non-profit center for the
conservation and study of
highly-endangered small apes.

Our focus areas are:
EDUCATION, CONSERVATION
and RESEARCH.

Meet "Goliath"

Born to Chloe and Medina, this little Javan male started with a bit of challenge, since Chloe's milk was not nutritious enough to keep him growing.  Hand-raised by the staff, he is now thriving and able to snuggle with his mom throughout the sunny days.  Soon he'll be big enough to stay with Chloe 24/7.  Goliath is fearless, acrobatic and extremely energetic.  Follow his antics on Facebook!

GREAT NEWS!

Thanks to all of you who contributed your votes and "likes" to the Gibbon Conservation Center in this year's Chase Community Giving campaign, the GCC was awarded a $10,000 grant which will help us create a more comfortable environment for the gibbons.  Thank you!

...AND TO ALL, A GOOD NIGHT!

WHAT A WONDERFUL YEAR!

2012 has been quite a year for the Gibbon Conservation Center. We have been extremely blessed by the support of friends, donors, volunteers, staff and Board Members who have contributed their energy, enthusiasm, dedication and funds to ensuring that the GCC thrives ---- and grows!
As we look back, we are very grateful for all the wonderful things that have happened! Some recent notables include:

PROJECT SIX:

In November, Six Flags Magic Mountain selected the GCC as their targeted non-profit for their annual Project Six day of service. After almost a month of planning and pre-work, more than 100 Magic Mountain employees converged on the GCC and, in the rain:
  • Built and installed wonderful (huge) weather-proof signs above our gate and on the road. Visitors should have no trouble finding us in the future!
  • Planted 25 trees that will provide both fruit and "browse" foliage for the gibbons.
  • Built and installed a Welcome Center just inside our gate, for welcoming visitors and selling gifts.
  • Donated and installed motion-sensor lighting at the gate, for security and on-site emergency lights that will enable us to see the entire site at night if needed.
  • Refinished Alan's beloved collection of lawn furniture.
  • Donated and installed an Education Center that will provide us with a place for presentations, videos and other information on gibbons, conservation and environmental issues.
The generosity of Six Flags Magic Mountain has improved our site and our ability to provide stronger education programs ---- and we are truly grateful!

WONDERFUL MURAL!

Ian Robertson-Salt generously donated his time and talent to create a beautiful mural representing Javan gibbons in the wild.  He patterned the faces on Khusus’ family so you may recognize them!  Ian is a professional mural artist and also a fan of the gibbons.  His work has enchanted our visitors and kept nearby gibbon families entertained!  Thank you, Ian!

THANK YOU!

  • To Alan's friends and family who joined us for a memorial gathering in his honor on November 4, 2012.  He is sorely missed!
  • To the visitors who joined us for Thanks-Gibbon 2012.  Maybe a bit rainy, but still very successful.  The gibbons were thrilled with their gifts and were apparently intrigued by the people and activities.
  • To the work groups from Make a Difference Day 2012 who cleared brush, painted buildings and generally spruced the GCC up in fine style!
  • To the multitudes of college students and their professors who help support the GCC through their attendance at tours.
  • To our dedicated volunteers who greet visitors at the gate, work at the gift shop, lead tours, feed the gibbons, steam vegetables, clear brush, rake and grounds and generally help provide the GCC with friendly faces and helping hands each day.

 INTERESTED IN HELPING THE GCC?
