Leon, thanks so much for bringing Roger onto the show. It was important to him that he had the chance to tell your audience about our new designation as a cardiac receiving center and that the community can come to us for life-saving heart procedures. When I first came to work at Henry Mayo I realized right away how special this hospital is and how unique this community is – I had never worked anywhere before where the community is as invested in their local hospital as the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley are invested in Henry Mayo, and likewise the hospital in them. Ignored in this Newsmaker interview with CEO Roger Seaver are several critical questions our community demands answers to:
How does the hospital plan to pay the long term costs of the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), and the cardiac programs. Mentioned are staff, including doctors, who must be paid to be “on call”, which amounts to millions of dollars yearly. Physicians and patients fear these added costs will be subtracted out of general hospital funds (which we are already seeing), especially for use by our elder seniors who represent 80% of hospital admissions.
Certainly to have these programs are a necessity, but will they be financially viable? I would expect the hospital to have these answers, but even from the inside, we are not able to get a response to these questions. Why?
Secondly, Mr. Seaver toward the end of the interview states “we aren’t making the choice of who your doctor is.” From a personal viewpoint, indeed he is.
Administratively, he has created a Board of Directors which is financially conflicted, that actively is eliminating select physicians from the Medical Staff. The assault on your local doctors persists, and I know the community is concerned about this malfeasance. This Administration tactic is unnecessary and only serves to create discord at our hospital.
