The Immediate Realities And Inevitable Consequences Of Abuse In Terms Of Mental Health

October 6, 2014

Hosts: Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits of Action
Guests: Michael Dougherty From Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital

Prior circumstances have kept Cary Quashen from showing up today at the KHTS on air studio for the latest edition of the ACTION Family Counseling sponsored radio program – Families In Action. This means the one and only Bob Sharits had to steer the boat himself, so he sought an exciting and informative guest. Someone who was familiar with Mental Health Awareness Month, which is of course October. There was only one man who could fill those shoes on such short notice, and that was Michael Dougherty from the local Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Michael has been involved with the hospital for years, and specifically in the mental health wing, and has a firm grasp on the social perception of mental health, and has a passion to change that perspective. Michael Dougherty mentioned, “People do not have a problem talking about their colds, or their bad flus, or even more seemingly personal conflicts such as gastrointestinal problems and terminal illness – but society is extremely apprehensive about discussing mental health issues. Even with their own doctors.” This is a serious issue because the brain is one of your most valuable organs. Bob Sharits really pressed his listeners this fact – when someone is involved with drugs, while also dealing with an undiagnosed (or known) mental illness, is a recipe for disaster.
