Hart Indians Take Saugus Centurions 3-2 in CIF Semifinal Game
What else did we expect.
Hart and Saugus once again played another epic extra inning battle with a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game on the line.
In a series that can be defined as nothing short of a pitching duel, the teams were once again held to just 5 runs combined and played their third extra inning game of the year.
Hart’s Paul Richan and Saugus’s Chase Wheatcroft went pitch for pitch through five innings, each allowing just two runs.
Hart struck first, putting up two runs after a throwing error by the Centurions Brendan Griffith allowed Dayton Provovst and Michael Phillips to score.
Saugus would scratch and claw their way back, scoring once in the fifth and sixth innings after lead off doubles by Brian Little and Rudy Aguilar, followed by typical Saugus small ball, setting up another extra inning affair.
Saugus’s Caden Maher came on in relief in the sixth and was impressive. Maher was solid through the 9th, but a mistake in the 10th to Robert Reeves found its way over the right field fence giving Hart a 3-2 lead.
This time the Indians wouldn’t blow it, as Sean Ward would pitch five solid innings, shutting down the top of the Saugus order in the 10th, sending Hart to the CIF Southern Section finals for the 4th time in team history.
The finals will take place Saturday at San Manuel Stadium.
