  1. At the height of its time, the missions in CA record only about 20,000 natives under its care. The great reduction to native populations was due to their lack of immunity to Old World diseases and not a systematic desire to eliminate them. The job of the Padres was to turn the natives into productive citizens of the Spanish Empire and Catholic Church. This is very unlike the Americans who purposefully used disease to decimate the natives who they came across.

  2. Shirley is the new Berta. Wow.

  3. No I’m not. I’m saying that this woman is wasting her time on an issue that’s part of past history. The missions are wonderful. Indians did kill those trying to help them also. I’m sure the Indians were abused as well. But now we have the missions and a saint to boot. Move on!

  4. Waste of news space to cover this woman. The missions are a great addition to Our California history! Who’s alive to prove all these accusations. I’ll bet many Indians harmed priests and other Californians back in those early days in California!
