Almost 19 years ago, Deputy Shayne York was shot during a robbery while he was off duty in a hair salon with his fiancée.

York was taken off of life support and died but his family, friends and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department continues to carry on his memory.

A ceremony was held Wednesday morning to designate a Memorial Highway sign on the I-5 between Newhall Ranch Road and Hasley Canyon Road, as the Shayne York Memorial Highway.

Dozens attended the ceremony and spoke about who York was.
