WiSH Donates $5,000 to Sequoia Charter School Science Program

Mike Koegle and his students were grinning from ear to ear as they received a $5,000 donation from the WiSH Education Foundation on Thursday morning.

They say the donation will help them continue to learn and explore the subject, especially since teacher Mike Koegle’s passionate guidance and instruction helped them find a love for science.

Although it is a small charter school, Koegle hopes to give all these students as good of an education in the sciences–and in applying these concepts to real life–that they would receive at any other school in William S. Hart District.

WiSH Education Foundation Donates $5,000 to Sequoia School

WiSH is proud to announce a $5,000 donation to Sequoia School. Sequoia staff are consistently striving towards increasing student engagement through enriching educational programs to prepare students for 21st Century demands; as a result, Sequoia has incorporated cutting edge curriculum from Project Lead the Way with the intention of delivering curriculum in a functional and applicable way. The money was used to purchase state of the art lab devices that allow the students to explore Gram staining, bacterial cell morphology, infectious disease classifications and nomenclature, human sickle cell traits/patterns, hair and fingerprint minutiae, and much more! The donation follows funding from WiSH that assisted Sequoia in bringing the program to the school last year – with the additional funding, Sequoia staff can expand and grow the program.

During the visit to the school by members of the WiSH Board of Directors, students and staff expressed their gratitude and moved some of the WiSH representatives to tears. “The students articulated sincere gratitude for the support from WiSH and explained how the purchase of this equipment had made a significant difference for them – not just in their academics, but how it made them feel about school and about themselves. The addition of this equipment simply makes them so excited; what they are doing in the classroom helps them love learning at the highest level,” said Amy Daniels, Executive Director of WiSH. “To hear a young person talk about what the class means to them and how much they appreciate the support of the Sequoia staff makes me recognize again how much I love my job. To be able to make a difference in the classroom and have it register with the kids is what the WiSH Education Foundation is all about – every dollar striving to have that kind of impact. And it does. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, like it was today.”

The mission of Sequoia School is to provide a supportive and academically focused environment for students, grades 7-12, through collaborative learning teams composed of highly qualified teachers, support staff and Educationally Related Intensive Counseling Services (ERICS). Sequoia’s program is uniquely designed to address the needs of students experiencing significant social-emotional/behavioral difficulties which adversely impact their ability to make educational progress in a comprehensive campus setting. They welcome and encourage community support.
