The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873

americangenocide“An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873” by Benjamin Madley

Conversation with the author, hosted by the California Historical Society

Between 1846 and 1873, California’s Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Benjamin Madley is the first historian to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.

  1. I have always said that the Indians were treated the worst in our history, it’s not in Ca. it started when our people came across our country to get to Ca.

Ben Madleys account of genocide begins in this book after the Mission Period. California most certainly suffered far worse than most know about or care to know about. Ben Madleys book is one of the most valuable piece of American Historical Truth Written.
This Country has people alive today who’s grandparents were in the business of killing Indian People. Shame on the history of this country
