This Week @ NASA: Warmest Global Temperature on Record; Remembering Gene Cernan

Warmest Global Temperature on Record

NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced on Jan. 18, that global surface temperatures in 2016 were the warmest since modern record keeping began in 1880. The finding was based on results of independent analyses by both agencies. According to analysis by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, 2016 is the third year in a row to set a new record for global average surface temperatures, further demonstrating a long-term warming trend.

Cygnus Cargo Module Arrives at KSC

The Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) of Orbital ATK’s Cygnus spacecraft has arrived at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, in preparation for the company’s next cargo mission to the International Space Station. The Cygnus is targeted to launch on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on March 16 from nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to deliver essential supplies, equipment, and scientific experiments to astronauts aboard the space station.

Up in 30 Seconds

This 30-second time-lapse video shows the construction of the 221-foot-high Test Stand 4693 at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, from May 2014 to December 2016. The test stand will subject the 537,000-gallon liquid hydrogen tank of the Space Launch System rocket’s massive core stage to the same stresses and pressures it must endure during launch and in flight.

Remembering Gene Cernan

Former NASA astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, died Jan. 16 at the age of 82. The Gemini and Apollo astronaut traveled to space three times, including two trips to the moon. He was also the second American to walk in space. In a statement, NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden remembered Cernan as a patriot and a pioneer who helped shape our country’s bold ambitions to do things that humankind had never before achieved.

And that’s what’s up this week @NASA …
