Caltrans News Flash: Rapid Response to Montecito Mudslide

In this Caltrans News Flash, Caltrans District 5 Public Information Officer Jim Shivers takes you to the scene of a major mudslide which closed US Highway 101 in the heart of Montecito in Santa Barbara County for twelve days resulting in lengthy detours for 90,000 motorists who travel through this corridor each day. Jim speaks with Caltrans Senior Construction Engineer Jason Kline and Acting South Region Maintenance Manager Chris Chalk who explain what they saw when they first arrived on the scene of this major incident and what steps they took to safely re-open the highway.

Caltrans was able to open the highway in only 12 days restoring service to this major north/south artery on the south coast of Santa Barbara County. The Caltrans team is proud of their contribution to public safety while working cooperatively with the emergency responders.
