After 18 months in planning and development, the new Ready to Work Academy at College of the Canyons launched with 7 students from Carousel Ranch. The Academy will change the face of post- secondary education for young adults with special needs in our valley, offering certificate based courses in a variety of subjects, beginning with the first such course “Workplace Skills in Customer Service for Retail, Food Service, and Hospitality”. This pilot class (along with two more in the fall) was funded through a grant from Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Los Angeles County 5th District Supervisor. Seven graduates from Carousel Ranch’s Ready to Work program will take part in this initial pilot course, encompassing both classroom training at COC along with practicum/work experience (teaching customer service, food service and retail) at Starbucks along with a local hotel teaching the hospitality portion.
In order to build upon the success of Carousel Ranch’s RTW program, College of the Canyons looks to develop this partnership to offer short-term training which is suited for students with special needs, providing vocational training in specific job categories with a goal of job placement for candidates who enroll in the program. In the words of John Milburn, Executive Director, Employee Training Institute (ETI) at COC, “College of the Canyons is thrilled to be a collaborator in this very important endeavor. We are appreciative of our first business partner, Starbucks, for opening their hearts and coffeehouse to give our students real-world experience in the customer service field. Together, we will make a difference in the community and touch the lives of these bright and wonderful young people.”
