Art Symposium 2020 | The Director’s Chair

Offered by the City of Santa Clarita, the FREE Arts Symposium joins New Heights Artists Development Series during ‘ARTOBER’ for a sequence of workshops and panel discussions designed to engage and educate creative individuals, no matter what level of experience.

In this panel, three directors discuss their unique journeys to and experiences in the director’s chair. They will cover documentary and commercial directing, network television (and how you get in that director’s chair) and independent filmmaking.

MEET THE PANELISTS:
RACHEL FELDMAN
Rachel Feldman is an accomplished film and television director. This past season, she directed multiple episodes of “Blue Bloods,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Rookie,” and the pilot of “The Baxters.” She has directed movies for Freeform, Lifetime Television and The SyFy Channel.
Feldman is in active development to direct her screenplay LILLY, a feature film based on the life of Fair Pay icon, Lilly Ledbetter, championed by Meryl Streep. The screenplay is an Athena List winner and Feldman is the recipient of the NYWIFT Ravenal Foundation Grant. Her pilot KINKS was optioned by eOne Television, won the 2020 ScreenCraft and WGA Drama Queens Best Pilot Awards.
An activist for women behind the camera, she is interviewed in “This Changes Everything,” “Half The Picture” and “Celluloid Ceiling.” A former chair of the DGA Women’s Steering Committee, she can be found on Twitter @WomenCallAction.

FREDERICK TAYLOR
For this southside of Chicago native, the story is in the telling. Frederick brings his exceptional filmmaking talent for capturing stories to his work, traveling the world as a documentary filmmaker and photographer. His projects have led him to informal settlement villages in Nairobi, Kenya and Lusaka, Zambia and hospitals for the poor in Lima, Peru. Frederick has documented kids in India and at risk people in South Central Los Angeles. From Hollywood to the heartland Frederick has documented America.
In Romania, Frederick directed the documentary “After The Fall: HIV Grows Up.” The film follows the stories of the survivors of the pediatric AIDS epidemic of 1989. The health crisis was recognized by the international community just days after the fall of communism. Traveling around the globe to the vibrant and exciting capital of Kenya, Frederick went straight to Mukuru – an informal settlement/slum just outside of Nairobi that is home to over 600,000 people. The project, documenting a program called HIV FREE GENERATION, was sponsored by PEPFAR (U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief). Ambassador Sandra Thurman, former AIDS Tsar under President Bill Clinton, tapped Frederick to direct the video for the project as part of the ongoing HIV/AIDS prevention work she does.
Close to his office headquarters, Frederick has been a long-time go-to director and executive producer for Coca-Cola, The Georgia Lottery, EarthShare, UNICEF, CNN, Nike, Electronics Arts, ATL Eats, Atlanta Children’s Hospital and Himalayan Children’s Charities. His current projects in production include a documentary/web series about Michael Jackson, a documentary/web series about Barack Obama, and a documentary about women boxers.
His pet project is generating new and exciting original content for the Internet. Stay tuned in and logged on for tomorrowpictures.TV. The revolution will be downloaded. Frederick built this internet network from scratch as a place to showcase his own story content and other interesting content from fast-forward artists and policy influencers from around the world.
