Learn How Henry Mayo Is Protecting Premature Babies with Donor Milk

In this segment of SCVTV’s Community Corner, Shannon Kliewer, Lactation Program Coordinator at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, shares valuable insights into the hospital’s donor breast milk program that’s giving premature babies a fighting chance at life.

Premature infants are especially vulnerable to NEC, short for necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious intestinal disease and one of the leading causes of death in neonatal intensive care units. Even full-term babies with medical complications can be affected. One of the most effective ways to protect infants from NEC is through breast milk. But when a mother is unable to produce enough milk and formula isn’t an option, donor milk from a certified milk bank can be lifesaving.
