SCVTV's Community Corner | Learn How Henry Mayo Is Protecting Premature Babies with Donor Milk
|
In this segment of SCVTV’s Community Corner, Shannon Kliewer, Lactation Program Coordinator at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, shares valuable insights into the hospital’s donor breast milk program that’s giving premature babies a fighting chance at life. Premature infants are especially vulnerable to NEC, short for necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious intestinal disease and one of the leading causes of death in neonatal intensive care units. Even full-term babies with medical complications can be affected. One of the most effective ways to protect infants from NEC is through breast milk. But when a mother is unable to produce enough milk and formula isn’t an option, donor milk from a certified milk bank can be lifesaving.
