In this jam-packed episode of SCVTV’s Community Corner, JCI Santa Clarita shares details about its all-important Veterans Resource Fair; the City of Santa Clarita offers a sneak peek at vital Back-to-School resources for students and parents; Blue Star Ranch shows how a poker run can make a difference in the lives of veterans; Guardians SCV invites the community to honor those lost on 9/11 at its meaningful Patriot Day Car Show and Breakfast; a new collaboration of local authors and illustrators is bringing the love of reading to students and educators; and on a brand-new episode of This Week in Santa Clarita, discover how your library fines can lend a helping hand. More from This Week’s Guest Lineup It’s been a busy summer for Santa Clarita parks! Co-hosts Carrie Lujan and Dave Caldwell kick off the show with updates, including the new “River of Lights” installation at Central Park, the transfer of William S. Hart Park from Los Angeles County to the City making it Santa Clarita’s 40th park, and expansion plans at David March Park. The hosts then chat with husband and wife, Jimmy and Kari McCoy, co-chairs of the JCI Santa Clarita’s Veterans Resource Fair. The McCoys share their personal story of veterans advocacy and how families can get involved. The fair will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., at College of the Canyons. Ellie Kalman, Senior Librarian for the city of Santa Clarita, highlights Back to School resources available to students and parents. The library has added new programs like Mango, which is a learning language database and HelpNow, an online tutoring resource and it’s all for free! Following that, we hear from Blue Star Ranch as they give us an update on the Ranch itself and preview its premier event, the Blue Star Ranch Poker Run Fundraiser. Ranch Manager Mike Salinas and co-founder John Zhe discuss the importance and impact of Blue Star Ranch’s program, which provides equine-assisted therapy to veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. The poker run will take place at Mint Canyon Moose Lodge, Sept. 13. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Tim Traurig, President and Founder of Guardians Santa Clarita Valley and Jon O’Sullivan, Veteran and Facilitator for Guardians San Fernando Valley. Give a preview of the annual Patriot Day Car Show and Breakfast—an event honoring the promise to “Never Forget” 9/11. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, from 8 a.m. to noon at 28776 The Old Road in Valencia. Veronica Stanley-Hooper, Founder of SCV Children’s Books Authors & Illustrators, and author Adalgisa Nico share details about their new collaboration promoting literacy among local students and educators.
