SCVTV's Community Corner | Local Group of Authors, Illustrators Bring Love of Reading to SCV Classrooms

|
SCV Children’s Books, Authors and Illustrators is a relatively new group of creatives who visit grade school classrooms throughout the Santa Clarita Valley with a goal to foster a love of literacy among students. Veronica Stanley-Hooper, founder of SCV Children’s Books Authors & Illustrators, and Adalgisa Nico, author for SCVCBAI, shine light on why inclusivity and diversity are so vital in creating books that every child can relate to. The authors explain how representation is a key element in getting young students excited to read. While tablets and iPhones are fun and entertaining, books have the capacity to fill that fundamental need to be seen and heard. SCVCBAI partners with local schools (and the greater Los Angeles area) to host literacy events, where the authors come in costumes and bring their books to life. And because 60% of 4th-graders nationwide aren’t reading at grade level, events such as literacy nights are essential to improving and enhancing reading skills.
