More from This Week’s Guest Lineup

The show kicks off with the introduction of guest host Ilyana Capellan, who’s filling in for Carrie Lujan. The Southern California native shares her journey from being recruited as a cheerleader by Austin Peay University to working as a journalist during the COVID-19 pandemic. Find out what brought her back to the Golden State.

The hosts then sit down with Melanie Parson and Marlene Olivastro, volunteers and planning committee members for Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The two share their personal connection to the devastating disease. Melanie’s grandmother, Dolores Olivastro (Marlene’s mom), lived with dementia and Alzheimer’s for 10 years. Hear the emotional toll it takes on caregivers and find out how you can help by participating in the upcoming Walk, which is being held Oct. 4 at Bridgeport Park.

Ariana Bilek, library administrator for the city of Santa Clarita, highlights the meaningful Food for Fines campaign, a heartfelt call to action to help feed the community while clearing your library fines (of up to $20). Donating non-perishable food items and toiletries at any of the three branches (Old Town Newhall, Valencia or Canyon Country) you not only erase your fines, but also support The Salvation Army, Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry and Santa Clarita Grocery.

Following that, we hear from the William S. Hart Union High School District as Vince Ferry, assistant superintendent of educational services and Carolyn Hoffman, chief administrative officer of educational services and student learning, put a spotlight on the various programs that focus on the unique needs of every student. The two educators also highlight the most recent milestone the Hart District just reached…the number of students who’ve completed the Career and Technical Education programs has doubled in the last two years.

Next up, we follow the yellow brick road to the Soroptimist International of Great Santa Clarita Valley’s (SIG-SCV) annual fashion show! Chair Lissa Mahler, and Luana Smith, president of SIG-SCV, give a fun, sneak preview of “Defy Gravity: A Masquerade in the Emerald City of Dreams.” The annual, purpose-driven event benefits SIG-SCV’s core programs: Dream It, Be It, which supports local high school girls by providing mentorship and career education and the Live Your Dream Award, which awards grants to local women pursuing higher education. Mahler and Smith also shine light on how SIG-SIV and its programs make such an impact.

We then hear from Santa Clarita Elks Lodge 2390 representatives who highlight the annual, family-friendly Elks Car and Bike Show! Wayne Edwards, past exalted ruler, and Mike Brandriff, exalted ruler, explain that the event is more than just a car show. While the community can expect motorcycles, chili, boutique shopping, bake sale and tri-tip, the annual Car and Bike Show continues the Elks’ mission of giving back.

Finally, learn how you can make a positive impact in your local community by taking part in Make a Difference Day on a brand new episode, of “This Week in Santa Clarita”
