SCVTV’s Community Corner: Season 6, Episode 20

On this episode of SCVTV’s Community Corner, hear from amazing nonprofits such as the Child & Family Center, Circle of Hope and Titania K9 Fund who are hosting meaningful events the community is invited to; discover ways to help young minds develop a love for learning with Santa Clarita Public Library’s, “One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten;” tap into the rich and vibrant traditions of the Native American culture with the Fernadeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians at the annual Hart of the West Native American Pow Wow; finally, on a brand new “This Week in Santa Clarita”, discover all the fun and inclusive updates to Old Orchard Park.

More from This Week’s Guest Lineup

Kicking off this week’s episode, co-hosts Dave Caldwell and Carrie Lujan show their appreciation to Agua Dulce Women’s Club who graciously delivered a basket full of delicious eats (and a tiara for Lujan) in honor of its annual fair and parade. We also get a glimpse into the busy control room, which is packed with students from the William S. Hart Union High School District’s Career and College Readiness Program. The students are gaining valuable, real-world experience in television production while still in school.

We then hear from Nikki Buckstead, president and CEO of the Child and Family Center, as she talks about the recent $300,000 cuts in state funding. The drastic cuts will have devastating impacts on the Center’s many services, such as relocating victims and their families to a safe place. That’s what makes this year’s Purple Walk Domestic Violence Awareness 5K, which is being held Saturday, Oct. 11, so vital in raising funds to help offset those cuts.

Michael Merino, marketing and outreach coordinator for the city of Santa Clarita, shares all the fun details of the “One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten” challenge, hosted by the Santa Clarita Library. The challenge is a nationwide initiative designed to help foster a love of reading and lifelong learning. Merino shares details of how it works, why the challenge matters and the rewards and prizes offered.

Co-chairs for Circle of Hope Tea, Danyelle Sanders and Tricia Rasplicka, give us a fun, sneak preview of the nonprofit’s signature fundraiser, “Happily Ever Afternoon Tea: Once Upon 21 Years.” Guests will be immersed and transported into an enchanted, storybook setting that’s fit for royalty. Proceeds from the meaningful event will benefit the vital resources to those in our community who are going through their cancer journey. The event will take place, Saturday, Oct. 18, at Bella Vida at the SCV Senior Center. Tickets are still available.

We then sit with members from the Fernadeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, as they give us a colorful preview of the annual Hart of the West Native American Pow Wow. Rudy Ortega, Jr., Tribal President and Joe Bodle, Tribal Senator, discuss the beloved community tradition that honors the rich traditions and history of Native American culture. The two-day event will take place Oct. 4 – Oct. 5.

We also hear from first time guest Denise Kane from Titania K9 Fund who is hosting an annual fundraiser benefiting the therapy dog program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Kane, host of “WANTED,” a western-theme gala benefiting the impactful work of therapy dogs and their owners, talks about the inspiration behind Titania K9 Fund and how the organization got its start. She’s joined by CHLA Therapy Dog Team members Marcy Ellenbogen, with her lovable dog Ollie, and Charlene Lafontant, with her adorable dog Mochi. The two discuss the healing powers of dogs and the impact it has on children who are terminally ill. “WANTED” will take place Oct. 5, at the Sand Canyon Country Club.

Finally, one of Santa Clarita’s oldest and most beloved parks just completed its recent and inclusive makeover. Old Orchard part is now ready its closeup. Hear about all the upgrades on a brand new episode, “This Week in Santa Clarita.”
