For nearly 50 years, the Child and Family Center has been providing services, resources and a safe space for individuals and their children who are in abusive relationships. But now, some of its programs are in danger due to the recent $300,000 cuts in state funding. Nikki Buckstead, the Center’s president and CEO, discusses the impact those cuts will have on programs the Child and Family Center offers, including the relocation of victims and their families to a safe place. That’s what makes this year’s Purple Walk Domestic Violence Awareness 5K, which is being held Saturday, Oct. 11, so crucial in raising funds to help offset those cuts. The family-friendly event is also open to dogs! Buckstead explains how pets can also be abused or used to manipulate victims. The event will include live music, a pancake breakfast and vendor booths. Funds raised will support the free services the Center provides, including emergency shelter for those in dangerous situations, a 24-hour hotline, counseling and legal advocacy.
