There are many educational and personal benefits of being a dual language student. From higher academic learning and cross cultural understanding to stronger cognitive skills, gaining fluency in another language can open up so many possibilities.

John Turner, principal of Placerita Junior High School, talks about the school’s Dual Language Immersion Program (DLI), a statewide initiative that begins in kindergarten. This year, Placerita welcomed the first set of DLI students from Old Orchard Elementary School.

Jose M. Lopez, a History and Social Studies teacher at Placerita, shares his personal journey from growing up as an English as a Second Language student to now teaching DLI students. Lopez said the demanding but rewarding program, which involves teaching a curriculum in half-English and half-Spanish, is taught in three subjects at Placerita: Science, English and Social Studies.
