In this episode of SCVTV’s Community Corner, co-hosts Carrie Lujan and Dave Caldwell kick things off with exciting news from The Master’s University women’s soccer team. Junior Forward Maddy Traylor scored eight goals in a span of two games and earned the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Player of the Week. Traylor broke two team records, while also tying a third. Switching gears, Lujan then discussed the city of Santa Clarita’s all-important Community Development Block Grant funding, which benefits local, lower-income residents. She also announced the release of the Community Needs Survey, which assists the City in prioritizing the SCV’s biggest needs. We then chat with the Santa Clarita Food Pantry about the recent cuts to federal funding and changes in Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP). Executive Director Joanne Ainsworth shines light on the Pantry’s most critical needs during these uncertain times. And Rachel Compton, community development director, also shares a sneak preview of the meaningful 40th Anniversary Celebration, which recognizes the Pantry’s lasting impact in the Santa Clarita Valley. We’re then joined by Kyle Lopez, event supervisor for the city of Santa Clarita, who brings some holiday cheer as she highlights the beloved community tradition – Light Up Main Street. The fun-filled event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., in Old Town Newhall and will include live performances, food trucks, holiday shopping and thousands of twinkling lights. Next, we speak to Bob Brauneisen, superintendent of the Castaic Union School District, who spotlights essential initiatives, such as the Castaic Learning Initiative for Mastery and Beyond (or CLIMB), which addresses student performance and stagnant test scores. Brauneisen also highlights current bond projects and leadership changes within the District. Following Brauneisen, we’re joined by Kevin MacDonald, chief executive officer of the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. MacDonald shines light on the Center’s current needs and also shares a sneak peek at its holiday lineup. One of the more meaningful events is the SCV Senior Center’s annual Thanksgiving Feast, which takes place on the holiday itself. The occasion is meant to bring companionship, friendship and community to our local seniors, who otherwise would be spending the holiday alone. We then chat with Katie Tanguma, who introduces us to the handsome Barkley, an energetic Boxer mix that Tanguma has been fostering. Barkley is from Hank’s Legacy Foundation, a local all breed animal rescue. The playful pup is great with kids, other pets and would be an amazing fit for an active family! Tanguma also discusses why puppies as Christmas gifts aren’t necessarily a good idea. And finally on a brand new episode of, “This Week in Santa Clarita,” discover how you can honor local heroes at the always meaningful Veterans Day Ceremony.
