The Saugus Cafe traces its origins in Santa Clarita to 1888, when the Saugus Train Station was constructed with a dining facility located inside the depot. At that time, the cafe’s operations consisted of a public dining room and bar, a kitchen, a pantry, and upstairs hotel rooms, and these spaces occupied more than half of the station building. In 1916, as the Southern Pacific Railroad required additional space for its operations, the cafe relocated across the highway, marking the beginning of its evolution beyond the train depot. Filmed: Dec 2025/Jan 2026 Edited: Jan 2026 ================== In the decades that followed, the Saugus Cafe passed through multiple buildings, owners, and eras, reflecting broader changes in transportation and the growth of the Santa Clarita Valley. As rail travel declined and automobile traffic increased, the cafe transitioned from a railroad eating house into a roadside destination. Over time, it became a gathering place for local residents, travelers, and generations of families, ultimately earning recognition as the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Los Angeles County. This video serves as a documentary record of the Saugus Cafe’s documented history, tracing its development from the railroad depot through its later incarnations. Using photographs, maps, and contemporary records, it distinguishes verifiable historical evidence from stories that have been repeated over time. The presentation places the cafe within its proper historical context while acknowledging the role of memory and tradition in shaping how historic places are remembered. Rather than perpetuating urban legends, this history centers on what the historical record demonstrates: where the cafe was located, how it functioned, why it moved, and how it became one of Santa Clarita’s most enduring and recognizable establishments. The goal of Legacy is to document and preserve stories created in and by people from the Santa Clarita Valley. Community feedback and ideas related to Legacy are welcome at feedback@scvtv.com.
