History Moment | ‘La Puerta’ Honored in Santa Clarita

The city of Santa Clarita recently commemorated the historical significance of La Puerta, a natural passage located within Elsmere Canyon, following its official designation as a California Point of Historical Interest on August 8, 2025.

La Puerta, which translates to “The Door” in Spanish, has served as a vital gateway into the Santa Clarita Valley for centuries. Situated between the San Gabriel Mountains to the east and the Santa Susana Mountains to the west, the passage provided one of the earliest routes connecting Rancho San Fernando and Rancho San Francisco along the historic El Camino Viejo. Long before European exploration, the route was used by the Tataviam as a footpath through the region. Its importance continued into the Spanish and Mexican eras, eventually developing into a trail and wagon road that played a key role in early California travel and settlement.

La Puerta is also historically significant for its connection to the 1769 Portola Expedition, recognized as the first recorded European land expedition into California. As the expedition passed through the corridor, members documented their first views of the Santa Clarita Valley. Near the base of the pass, they encountered the Tataviam village of Tochonanga, located in the area now known as Eternal Valley Memorial Park. The designation of La Puerta as a California Point of Historical Interest acknowledges both its longstanding cultural importance and its role in shaping regional history. It also reflects decades of community advocacy to preserve the surrounding landscape of Elsmere Canyon.
