Hi again everybody and welcome to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you high school and college basketball highlights from the past week, boys and girls playoff soccer, and once again give you the story of rugby being played here in Santa Clarita. But our lead story comes from the track as Canyon High graduate Alysia Montaño has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting an American indoor record of 1:23.59 in the 600 meters at the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday. Montaño’s time smashed the 33-year old American record by nearly three seconds. Her performance was the seventh fastest in history (indoors or outdoors) and was less than two-tenths of a second off the world best.
Tuesday was another big day for high school playoffs in Santa Clarita in boys basketball and soccer. Let's first start at Valencia where the Vikings were hosting the 20-9 Aliso Niguel Wolverines in the second round of the Division 1-A boys basketball playoffs. Strong start for the Wolverines as senior Kai Sato drains the three. Sato scored 10 in the game. The Wolverines leading scorer on the season, Scott Lynds, knocks down the outside jumper. All part of a 19 - 4 start. But in the second it's Riley Honaker leading the comeback. The Vikings went on an 11 - 2 run to get back into the game. Honaker then hits one from behind the arc. He went 3 for 3 from downtown scoring 13 of his 21 in the second quarter.
The Vikings continue with the pressure. Alex Sanchez with the theft, dishes it off to Honaker to finish off the fast break. Vikings trailed by three at the half. In the second half the Vikings make a push. Garrett Mike from deep. No good, but it's Honaker with the offensive rebound and the floater. The game is tied. But the Wolverines respond. Ronnie Harris picks up his fifth assist of the game as Mouricio Campos is awarded his 14th point. In the fourth with the Wolverines up by nine, Scott Lynds knocks down his fifth 3-pointer of the game, and the Vikings's season comes to an end with the 12-point loss...In other Division 1-A action, West Ranch got 21 out of Ako Kaluna and 13 from Kevin Harris in their 13-point win over the Oilers. They will now travel to Dana Point on Friday for the quarter-finals.
Trinity Classical moves on to the semi-finals of Division 6 with a 11-point win over Valley Christian. (64-53) They will HOST Joshua Springs, just like they did in the semi-finals of 8-man football a few months ago, a game the Knights lost. Can you say avenge the loss?
In girls soccer, the Valencia Vikings finished regulation in a 0-0 tie with Claremont, and so it went to penalty kicks, which the Vikings won 5-4. The Vikings now face Sunny Hills, at home in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Hart gave up three unanswered goals in the second half to end their season in Chino Hills, and the Cowboys gave up a freak goal and saw their season end at home to Long Beach Wilson.
(Boys soccer Wednesday)
Wednesday our attention turned to the second round of girls basketball and boys soccer. First on the hardwood where co-league champion Canyon travelled to Fontana to take on Kaiser in the second round of the division 2 Double-A playoffs, winning by 34 over the Cats. The No. 6-seeded Cowboys will now go on the road again to take on the 20-5 Lynwood Knights in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Lynwood is seeded No. 3. The other league co-champion, Valencia, had a home game against Centennial of Corona in the second round of division 1 Double-A, but the Vikings came up 19 points short in this one. Eight seniors played their final game as a Viking. And over at Saugus, the Centurions hosted the No. 2 seeded Murrieta Valley Nighthawks in division 2-A, finishing their season with a 16-point loss. Seven seniors played their final game as a Centurion.
Boys soccer occupied the pitch Wednesday afternoon with three teams from the Foothill League entering the second round, but only two were played. West Ranch's game against Oak Hills in Hesperia was snowed out. It is being played today, Thursday, and as of air time we do not have a final score. As for league champion Valencia hosting the Titans from Temescal Canyon in Lake Elsinore, that did not go so well as the Titans move on to the quarter-finals with the 2-1 win. And Hart took it on the chin as well in a game played at College of the Canyons with a 4-1 loss to Santa Paula.
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to give you highlights of The Master's College basketball from Tuesday night, and by popular demand we are going to once again give you a story that folks have been asking for. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The Master's Lady Mustangs basketball team is GOOD. They entered the week ranked 10th in the nation in NAIA Division 1, with their only previous losses coming from Golden State Athletic Conference rivals Westmont and Vanguard. But the Lady Mustangs got an opportunity to avenge the loss to Vanguard on senior night Tuesday when the Lions came to Bross Gymnasium in the second to last game of the regular season. The Lions opened an 8-0 lead, but after that it was all Mustangs. The Master's went on a 23-4 run and never looked back, scoring 49 in the first half and leading by 13. The Mustangs led by as much as 21 in the second half before Vanguard closed the gap to single digits. The Lady Mustangs were led by senior Lena Rivera's 19 points, 16 from sophomore point guard Whitney Best and 11 points nine rebounds from junior Jackie Marshall. Should The Master's win on Saturday on the road against Hope International and Vanguard lose on the road to San Diego Christian, the Lady Mustangs will secure second place in the conference and a bye to the semi-finals of the conference championship.
Then it was the men's team from The Master's taking the floor against Vanguard in a game between two teams in the bottom half of the conference standings. Devin Dyer, playing in his final game at Bross Gym, scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Mustangs to an 8-point win. After spotting the Lions to an 11-point lead at halftime, the Mustangs came back. They opened up the second half on a 16-2 run, Dyer scored seven during the stretch, and when former Canyon player Travis Divita hit this jumper, the Mustangs took the lead for the first time in the game. But the Lions then went on an 11-0 run, led by Selle Hann who scored 20 in the game. But the Mustangs would not roll over. From just inside half court, Leif Karlberg with the alley oop to Jason Logan... The Mustangs go on a 13-2 run to win by eight. Logan finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks, sophomore Derrick Fain finished with 12.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Kimi Yamamoto, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. Last week we gave you a story about a rugby club here in Santa Clarita. Well, we've had several responses from that story, primarily from people who said they heard about the story and wanted to see it again. So, that's what we are going to do. If you are looking for a unique sport that requires physicality, strength and agility, then maybe rugby is the sport for you. The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Rugby Club can give you an introduction to the sport from which American football evolved.
