Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia, I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to bring you highlights of the opening day of Foothill League baseball boys volleyball, and we start with our previews of each team in Foothill League baseball. But our lead story tonight comes out of Frankfurt, Kentucky, where The Master's College Lady Mustangs WERE contending for the NAIA national championship. And yes, unfortunately I said WERE. The Lady Mustangs were bounced out of the tournament in the first round thanks to Carroll College of Montana's 73-58 victory. The Master's shot just 31 percent from the field compared to the Fighting Saints 52 percent, and did not score a point in the final two minutes of the game. Lena Rivera and Zoe Scott each had 13 points for the Lady Mustangs, with Jackie Marshall adding 11. It's a disappointing early finish for The Master's, which was ranked 10th in the country in last week's Division 1 poll.
The final high school basketball game of significance was played on Saturday when the Trinity Classical Academy Knights lost 52-33 to Horizon of San Diego in the second round of the CIF State Division 5 playoffs. Ryan Brooks and Ian Caddow each scored seven points for this team, which has just one senior, one junior, four sophomores and SEVEN freshman. For such a young team to go this far means the future looks very bright for Trinity boys basketball.
Turning to the opening day of Foothill League baseball on Wednesday where upsets and extra-inning drama were the storylines. First at Canyon where the defending league champion West Ranch Wildcats were taking on the Cowboys, a team that finished 4-11 in league last season. Picking up the action in the bottom of the second inning with West Ranch up 2-0 and their ace Cody Bennett on the mound. Nick Tarolli singles to right, scoring Vincent Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald scored three times in the game. The Wildcats bring Kyle Williams in to pitch but the result is the same. Micah Moyle singles to right, plating Tarolli. Next it was Max Weinstein, 3-for-4 on the day, knocking in Chris Serrano. The Cowboys score five in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. In the fourth the Wildcats get two back, highlighted by an RBI single from Tyler Woldanski that scores Jagger Rusconi. Woldanski was 3-for-4 in the game. 5-4 Canyon. But in the bottom half of the inning the Cowboys re-assert their authority. Serrano triples to right center, scoring Tarolli and Justin Stark. Part of a 6-run fourth. The Wildcats emptied the bullpen in the game, throwing seven different pitchers trying to find a solution against the hot hitting Cowboys, none of them going more than an inning and two-thirds. Canyon pounded 16 hits in the game on their way to a huge opening day win. (13-4)
Over at Hart the Saugus Centurions came to renew their rivalry with the Indians. Two of the three games last season between these two clubs were decided by 1-run. And thru the first six innings of this one it appeared the two teams were headed for the same result. The only score in the first six came when Saugus's Roy Verdejo singled to left, bringing Chris Devery in to third on an error, and then ANOTHER error sent Devery in to score. After that it was all pitching. Hart's Aaron Hamilton struck out 8, giving up two UN-earned runs thru 7 innings of work. The Centurions sophomore Eric Little paced Hamilton with four strikeouts, allowing no runs over six innings. But in the bottom of the seventh the bats came alive for the Indians. Baggio Saldivar's base hit brings in Pearson Good from second to send the game to extra innings. Good finished 2-for-4 on the day. In the top of the 8th, Saugus puts another run on the board when Devery banged one up the middle. Freshman Caden Salkeld came in to score from second base and Saugus leads 2-1. Devery was 2-for-4 in the game with 3 RBI. But once again Hart answered. Dayton Provost singles into centerfield with the bases loaded scoring Joseph Bilbo. Provost was 2-for-5 in the game The Centurions, however, go on to score 3 in the top of the tenth and hold off an Indians rally to avenge a three-game sweep by Hart last year (5-4)
Over at Valencia the Vikings scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie to get the win over the Grizzlies. The Vikings Kyle Sanchez went 3-for-3 and drove in 3 runs with a pair of doubles. J.D. Busfield struck out 8 in 6 innings on the bump. (10-3)
Foothill League boys volleyball has not yet started but Tuesday was a good day to see a great test for the 4-1 Canyon Cowboys as they took on the 5-0 San Marino Titans.

We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we come back we will introduce you to the West Ranch Wildcats baseball team, defending champions of the Foothill League.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia.
2012 was a great year for West Ranch baseball. Two years prior the team had been ranked as high as sixth in the state and 18th in the COUNTRY with a team that featured eight players that went on to play NCAA college ball. But despite the strength of that 2010 team, it could not do what the 2012 team did... win a Foothill League championship. With nine seniors graduating from that team, including league MVP J.C. Cloney, where does West Ranch stand going into the 2013 season?
(Casey-"We return a really good pitcher...")
(Cody)
With two games a week played during the league season, every team needs two starters. Junior Davis LeBarron was inked as the No. 2, but a broken leg last week has ended his season. Now Burrill and co-head coach, and brother, Brady Burrill have to look for a new No. 2, with a couple of basketball players being the leading candidates.
(Casey-"Davis LeBarron getting hurt...")
Whenever a freshman makes varsity, that's news. In the case of Jagger Rusconi, the news went as far as being named an undersclassmen All-American, as well as all-state, all-cif and all-league. Rusconi hit .415 last season, with 3 home runs and 27 RBI.
(Casey-"Jagger is the real deal...")
Of the seven all-league players from West Ranch last season, four return. In addition to MVP J.C. Cloney, Josh Heinz and Gabe Peralta graduated, which only creates opportunities for players coming up.
(Casey-"Each year there's some turnover...")
With Valencia winning eight of the last 11 league titles, and Saugus finishing just a game back last year, the Wildcats know how difficult it will be to repeat.

We're going to step aside here on Inside Sports, and as we do I want to introduce you to this week's Wendy's of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The Valencia Vikings baseball team knows success. In eight of the last 11 years, the Vikings have won the Foothill League title, sending more players to college ball and the pros during that stretch than any other Santa Clarita team. 2012 saw the Vikings fall one game short of the title, finishing 10-5 in league and tied for second place with the Saugus Centurions. The 2013 Vikings, like every team in the Foothill League, are re-loading for the coming season.
(Snyder)
Gone from last year's squad are infielderTrey Williams drafted in the 11th round of the First-year amateur draft but choosing instead to go to COC, and catcher Brian Mundell, who made it clear if he wasn't drafted in the first five rounds he was going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Mundell was not drafted. How do the Vikings replace players like that?
(Snyder-"You don't")
The "A.J." Coach Snyder referred to is A.J. Balta, now a senior and two years removed from a sophomore season that saw him win league MVP. 2013 finds Balta injury-free with a scholarship to play baseball at Oregon when his high school career ends.
(Snyder on A.J.)
(A.J.)
The Vikings lost quality pitchers to graduation and return a staff filled with promise but not much experience. The staff will be anchored by 6-foot-7 Loyola-bound J.D. Busfield and Luke Sorocco.
(Snyder on pitching)
(Busfield)
For the Vikings to get back to the top spot in league, it comes down to one primary objective.
(Snyder-"Better win the close ones...")
The Vikings are 5-1 after getting the win over Golden Valley Wednesday and ranked 7th in CIF Division 1 baseball. Well that's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We'll see you again next time.
