Antonovich Seeks to Limit Unfunded Mandates in Aftermath of Federal Stimulus Spending
LOS ANGELES COUNTY — A motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich calls for an investigation to determine whether, by accepting funding from the Federal Economic Stimulus Package, the County will be committed to assume the costs for required programs and services after stimulus dollars have been depleted.
"We want to ensure that accepting these dollars will not lock in County taxpayers for additional spending after the stimulus money is gone," said Antonovich. "We need a thorough analysis of the long-term impact these programs will have on the County budget."
Antonovich's motion directs the County's Chief Executive Officer to report back in 14 days with a thorough analysis of the projects proposed in the Federal Stimulus Package and whether these projects will require County funding beyond the initial federal funding provided by the stimulus package. It also seeks to determine whether state laws need to be changed to accept the Federal Stimulus Package dollars and whether the County will be obligated to change any existing program practices, requirements or funding match levels after the stimulus funding ends.
