Antonovich Seeks Commemorative Stamp Honoring Japanese-American Soldiers in WWII
LOS ANGELES COUNTY — To honor the sacrifice and patriotism of the Japanese-American soldiers who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisor Antonovich to send a five-signature letter to the United States Postmaster General in support of a Japanese American World War II commemorative stamp.
"Despite President Franklin Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, relegating their families, friends and colleagues to internment camps, over 20,000 Japanese Americans served our country proudly during World War II," said Supervisor Antonovich. "Many served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Services — one of the most decorated units in American history."
The United States Postal Service recently announced that they will be reviewing a proposal by the Japanese Americans (Nisei) World War II Veterans Stamp Campaign to issue a commemorative stamp at their next Stamp Committee meeting on April 23-24, 2009.
