Antonovich Recognizes "Day of Remembrance" for Armenian Genocide

LOS ANGLES COUNTY — At the Board of Supervisors meeting on April 21, 2009, Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich presented a scroll to members of the Armenian community in recognition of the passage of his motion proclaiming April 24, 2009 as "Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923" throughout Los Angeles County.
"Los Angeles County is home to the largest population of Armenians in the United States, and they have enriched our County through their leadership in the fields of business, agriculture, academia, medicine, government and the arts," said Antonovich.
On April 24, 1915, the Turkish government began the systematic extermination of the Armenian community. Religious, political and intellectual Armenian leaders were among the 1.5 million victims who were arrested and murdered.
"Due to this horrible tragedy, the Armenian community is committed to ensuring that those who have died due to human rights atrocities are never forgotten," said Antonovich. "By consistently remembering and openly condemning the atrocities committed against the Armenians, Los Angeles County demonstrates its sensitivity to the need for constant vigilance to prevent similar events in the future."
