Superscooper Firefighting Aircraft Leased for Duty in Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES COUNTY To prepare for the 2008 fire season, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced that the Los Angeles County Fire Department has renewed a contract to lease two CL-415 SuperScoopers fire-fighting aircraft from the Government of Quebec.
"To continue our preparation for another severe fire season, these vital aircraft have been requested earlier in the season to supplement our county-owned water-dropping helicopters," said Antonovich.
SuperScoopers are a fixed-wing aircraft that can carry up to 1,620 gallons of water and takes only 12 seconds to scoop water from a lake and inject it with fire-resistant foam a combination up to 3 times more effective than water alone. They can be airborne in as little as five minutes and fly three hours before refueling.
In addition, an Erickson Aircrane Type I Helitanker was also leased for the 2008 fire season. Capable of delivering 2,200 gallons per drop, it will be placed into service from Monday, August 18, 2008 through December 15, 2008.
The SuperScoopers are expected to arrive at Van Nuys Airport on Monday, September 1, 2008, and will be placed into service through December 31, 2008, for a period of 122 days.
