Antonovich Seeks to Restore Fire-Damaged Facilities & Child Care Services at Olive View Hospital
Fire Damages 34 Buildings, Emergency Generator Failed, Child Care Facility Totally Destroyed
LOS ANGELES COUNTY — Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich will introduce a motion directing County departments to develop a plan that restores the fire-damaged housing units and child care facilities at Olive View Hospital, improves the electric generator operations and addresses the short and long term needs of the facility.
County firefighters, Health Services Hospital staff and County Police evacuated the facility's most vulnerable patients Friday night when fire surrounded the hospital. Evacuees from the neo-natal intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit were transported to local health facilities and overall disruption of health care was minimal. However, 34 buildings on the hospital's campus were damaged and the Olive View Medical Center's child care center was totally destroyed. Furthermore, emergency generators failed after just three hours when power lines were destroyed by the fire, prompting the Supervisor to require a corrective action plan to ensure dependable generator service for future emergencies.
Antonovich's motion directs the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of the Internal Services Department, the Interim Director of Health Services, and the Fire Chief to assess the damage and report back to the Board of Supervisors with recommendations to restore buildings and services, improve reliability of generator operations and mitigate future fire damage at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
