August Hiking Schedule
August 2 — Santa Clarita Canyons: Santa Clarita Canyons is a beautiful proposed wilderness area. The views from this hike are probably the best in Santa Clarita. You will be able to see the Santa Clarita and the San Fernando valley while on this hike. There is very little gain or loss while you traverse the mountain ridge top. Meet at Placerita before 8:30. We will carpool to the trailhead at 8:30. An Adventure Pass is required to park in the Angeles National Forest. I have 5 of them that we can use. If you have one, bring it. Also bring water, a wind breaker, and lunch is optional….we can make this a short or long hike-it’s up to you! RT-2 to 10 miles (You can turn around any time.)
August 9 — Whitney Canyon: Whitney Canyon is a beautiful under 6 mile RT riparian hike along a creek that runs through the end of May or June. It is loaded with wildflowers and ends at a series of waterfalls. To get to Whitney Canyon, take SR-14 to San Fernando Road. Exit. Veer towards the Park and Ride. Park. Meet in the MRCA parking lot to the left of the Park and Ride. We will leave promptly at 8:30. Bring water and snacks. Wear good boots and hat.
August 16 — Santa Clara River Twilight Stroll with our buddies at the Sierra Club. Meet at the Pavillions lot at McDonalds on McBean Parkway. We will leave at 6:00 PM.
August 23 — Elsmere Canyon: Elsmere is an exquisite canyon with both Riparian and Oak woodlands. It has recently been opened to the public. It was slated to become a dump, but the city of Santa Clarita fought this hot issue for years. Now 400 acres of it has been saved, and is currently being managed by the MRCA. This is a beautiful hike. The first part is relatively flat and easy. There are several switchbacks after the easy, flat portion. If you don't want to do the hills, let me know and I will point out where you should turn around. To get to Elsmere Canyon (same parking area as Whitney), take SR-14 to San Fernando Road. Exit. Turn South towards the Park and Ride. Park. We will meet in the MRCA parking area to the left of the park and ride. We will begin at 8:30, so be prompt. Bring water.
August 30 — Bear Divide: Bear Divide is the perfect, easy summer hike. There is a little bit of altitude, lots of shade, and it’s all downhill. We will be shuttling from one end of the trail to the other as this is not a round trip hike. (Unless you want to go back uphill when you’re done). This hike has some of the best views of the Santa Clarita valley and the San Fernando Valley. You’ll love it. Bring the kids too! Bring plenty of water. It is an easy, breezy 2 miles. Meet at Placerita Nature Center BEFORE 8:15. We’ll leave at 8:15 to carpool to the trailhead. Sticks are helpful if you have them. Bring your Adventure Pass, if you have one.
