Community Hiking Club Schedule for December
December 6 The Beast is a great hike with considerable gain in the first 3 miles, leveling off where it traverses the ridge to a pit stop before you head down into the San Fernando Valley. The hike ends in Wilson Canyon just above Sylmar. The RT is about 12 miles Bring lots of water, lunch, snacks. Meet at the Park and Ride at the end of San Fernando Road before 8:30 for an 8:30 departure.
NOTE CHANGE: Due to the recent fire in Sylmar, we will not end up at Wilson Canyon. Instead we will travel in the opposite direction from Whitney to Bear Divide. Some fire damage will be evident along our route, but for the most part, this route has not been burned. December 13 Chantry Flats We'll hike to 50' Sturtevant Falls near Sierra Madre. It is a 9½ mile hike with a 2100ft elevation gain. Despite the distance it is a fairly easy trail. Bring lunch, snacks, lots of water and wear sturdy boots. Poles help if you have them. Meet at the outer Gate of Towsley Cyn before 8:00 AM to carpool to the trail head at 8. December 20 Tracker Jim Lowrey at Placerita Nature Center Picnic area at 8:30. We will hike the Manzanita Trail after the presentation. Manzanita is steep for the first 3 miles, then a slight uphill climb for about 2 miles to Los Pinetos Trail which is 3 miles downhill to Walker Ranch, and then 2½ miles back to the Nature Center. Bring lunch, snacks, lots of water and sticks if you have them. Plan to return to the Nature Center between 2-3 PM. December 27 Temescal Canyon is a beautiful canyon in Pacific Palisades. Meet at the outside gate at Towsley Canyon at 8:00 to drive to the trail head. This trail has an easy 850 foot gain and is about 5 miles. The views are lovely from the top where you can see the ocean. There is also a beautiful little waterfall, with shallow pools below. (Directions to trailhead: Take the 405 to the Sunset offramp. Exit. Turn right on Sunset. Continue all the way to Temescal Cyn Road and turn right into the MRCA property. Parking $5.00)
Community Hiking Club's Nature Series Join us on December 20 to meet Animal Tracker and author Jim Lowrey who will be joining us at Placerita Nature Center's Picnic Area at 8:30 AM. He will lead us on a short walk on the Canyon and Hidden trails, focusing on finding animal tracks and signs.
Jim is the founder and principal teacher of Earth Skills, and has taught tracking for 22 years. He includes methods of track reading, animal movement, and the tracking of specific mammals such as black bears, bighorn sheep, elk, mountain lions, and badgers. He also offers classes in wilderness survival, plant uses, and nature awareness.
Home School Adventure Club The home school kids of Santa Clarita hike with Dianne 2 times a month and learn about the environment around them, eco-problems, geology, the local oil industry, fossils, plants, animals, animal corridors, and much more. Please join us any time for a hike! We always need help!! All hikes are scheduled from 8:30-10:30.
