City Announces Annual Safety Checklist to Community for Daylight Savings Time

March 8, Daylight Savings Time, is quickly approaching and although many of us relish the "fall back" mantra that allows us an extra hour of sleep in September, it's easy to forego the added zzz's in spring with the thought of waking up to much sunnier, warmer, longer days. The City of Santa Clarita would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of some other things that they can do around the house this time of year to help make sure they are prepared in the event of an emergency.
• Daylight Savings Time begins on March 8 — set clocks one hour ahead. In addition to changing out the batteries in smoke detectors, portable radios and flashlights, and checking the charge level on fire extinguisher gauges, dedicate an hour to create or update an Emergency Financial Kit.
• Emergency Cash Include a sufficient amount of cash to get you through an emergency period by considering your day-to-day family cash needs. Also, store emergency cash in small bills because ATMs may not be available, due to power outages.
It is also helpful to keep an extra credit card solely for emergency funds.
• Important Documents Because identity theft is a prevalent part of crime today, take steps to protect important papers, items, and documents. Keep documentation in a safe deposit box, fireproof storage box, or with an out-of-state-contact and scan documents onto a CD, or flash drive for backup. You may also consider online back-up service sites in the event you are not able to reach your own computer. Important documents to store may include personal identification items like Social Security cards, birth, marriage and death certificates, copies of drivers' licenses and passports. Other important documentation like insurance policies, deeds, wills and trusts, recent income tax returns, stocks and bonds should also be kept in a secure place. Residents should also keep an inventory log of household items along with photo or video documentation in the event of a household disaster in which items cannot be recovered.
