2009 Emergency Expo Helps Community Prepare for Disaster
The City of Santa Clarita will hold the 2009 Emergency Expo on Saturday, March 21 at College of the Canyons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Expo, free of charge, is designed to help residents learn how to exercise Emergency Management through creating family plans, developing emergency kits and preparing for unexpected disaster.
The Expo, designed to educate, as well as entertain the whole family, will feature games, demonstrations and free gifts available to everyone who attends.
L.A. County Emergency Medical Services Agency will display their mobile hospital at the Expo, demonstrating their level of preparedness if hospitals become unavailable in an emergency. The exhibit features a 10-bed hospital unit and a two-bed operating room with comprehensive medical monitoring.
Family-friendly activities are also on the agenda for the 2009 Emergency Expo. Guests can make their own First Aid kits and enjoy Campout Cooking with the Girl Scouts, win free safety helmets at the Share the Road booth, participate in a "Quake Walk" with the opportunity to win prizes, and take part in preparedness time games where guests will enjoy free Robek's smoothies.
Special needs families may arrive early to the Expo at 9:00 a.m. during the Access Hour when volunteer ambassadors will be available to assist families. The access hour is in collaboration with the Community and Law Enforcement Aware Response (C.L.E.A.R.) project to promote informal relationships between first responder and the special needs community.
A special needs registry, provided by C.L.E.A.R., will also be available at the Expo, which is meant to assist individuals who are at-risk during emergency situations due to limited communication, age, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disabilities, or other disorders.
Some events scheduled for the Emergency Expo include CPR/AED, First Aid and City of Santa Clarita CERT demonstrations. Guest of the event will also enjoy the opportunity to learn about emergency communications and amateur radio.
Kids can also watch the American Red Cross puppet show, win safety helmets at the Share the Road booth, meet Smokey Bear and learn preparedness techniques to practice at school in the event of an emergency.
For community members with animals, local and County veterinarians will attend the Expo to discuss pet safety and health in the time of a crisis. Emergency pet supplies and equipment provided by local businesses will also be available.
