City Exercizes Environmental Awareness, Keeps Kids Safe on the Way to School
City Receives $2 Million in Grant Funding for Cyclists, Pedestrians, Kids
Santa Clarita's Non-Motorized Transportation Plan recently helped the City in receiving more than $2 million in grant funding through the State and Federal Safe Routes to School programs and the Bicycle Transportation Account program. The City adopted the Non-Motorized Transportation Plan in June 2008 and the recently-received grant funding will be used to help guide the future development of bicycle, pedestrian and multiuse facilities within the City and recently enabled the City to receive grant funding to continue its efforts.
The Non-Motorized Transportation Plan provides the practical tools, plans and programs for the City to encourage alternatives to traveling by private vehicle such as walking, biking or using mass transit.
"Not only does the Non-Motorized Plan help the City reduce automotive pollution with more bike routes and pedestrian walkways," said Mayor Frank Ferry. "It increases community safety on local routes to school- whether our kids bike, walk or skateboard."
Physical improvements have are already constructed at three elementary schools within the City through the Safe Route to School grants, creating an environment allowing for more walking and bicycling. The Safe Route to School grants will provide funding for improvements at six more City elementary schools over the next two years.
The Bicycle Transportation Account grant will allow for the construction of on-street bicycle lanes in the Valencia Industrial Area. This program will install bicycle lanes along Avenue Scott and Avenue Stanford to improve the connectivity to existing bicycle lanes throughout the area and encourage local commuters to bicycle to work.
