Weatherbugs Invited to Attend Weather Spotter Training
National Weather Service to Conduct Training and Recruitment Session
The City of Santa Clarita, in conjunction with Magic Mountain, will host a National Weather Service Weather Spotter Training and Recruitment session on Tuesday June 16th 2009 at 7 p.m. The training session, held in the Century Room on the first floor of City Hall, is free and open to the public.
The National Weather Service Spotter Program is a volunteer organization comprised of individuals with an interest in weather. Weather spotters call in to the National Weather Service with reports on significant weather occurrences. These reports provide important ground truth for weather forecasters, improving forecasts and warnings.
The Weather Spotter Training and Recruitment session will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes, and will conclude with a question and answer session. The event will include detailed information about severe weather hazards, as well as background information on the National Weather Service. There is no registration process and attendees are not required to own weather equipment to become an official spotter for the National Weather Service.
Trained weather spotters can provide invaluable services to the National Weather Service. New spotters will receive personal spotter ID number and a packet with spotter instructions.
City Hall is located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard. For more information on the Weather Spotter Training and Recruitment session, please contact Joe Sirard at (805) 988-6615.
