Summer Youth Sports Programs Keep Kids Active on Break
Select Camps Instructed by Professional-Level Coaches
The City of Santa Clarita is offering a host of youth sports activities for community kids this summer. The youth sports summer camp season kicks off this Friday, June 5 with Shot Doctor Shooting Camp, which is $60 for residents and shows kids how to shoot basketballs with confidence.
Shot Doctor is held Friday, June 5 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. A Valencia Basketball Camp ($90) is also offered this summer for boys and girls aged 7-14. The camp gives participants instruction in scoring and ball handling skills from Santa Clarita high school players.
A Cool Hoops Basketball Camp ($105) will also be held for boys and girls aged 7-14, emphasizing offensive skills development through fun and innovative drills and contests. Valencia High School Boys' Basketball Coach and former UCLA Assistant Coach Greg Hayes will coach the Cool Hoops Basketball Camp, Shot Doctor Shooting Camp and Valencia Basketball Camp.
"The City is committed to providing residents and community kids with quality recreation activities with experienced coaches," said Mayor Frank Ferry. "The wide array of youth sports and other programs available throughout the summer ensure that our local youth get the most out of the City's state-of-the art recreation facilities and opportunities."
Youth sports programs continue with a number of basketball-geared classes and camps, including the Player's Academy Summer Basketball Camp ($104), which focuses on improving basketball fundamentals like ball handling, passing, shooting and defense. A Player's Academy Elite Shooting and Offensive Moves Camp ($84) will be held for kids who want to improve passing and ball handling skills. The camp will show participants proper warm-up procedures, footwork reading defenders and shooting under pressure.
Both the Players Academy Summer Basketball Camp and the Player's Academy Elite Shooting and Offensive Moves Camp will be coached by Cal Lutheran Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Geoff Dains.
Youth volleyball classes and camps will be offered this summer for community kids, as well. Sign up for the Youth Volleyball Camp ($105), open to boys and girls aged 8-17. The camp is held for two hours a day for four days and is designed to help novice, intermediate, and experienced players gain the skills needed to take their game to the next level.
An Elite Volleyball Camp ($90) will be offered for experienced players who want to improve on their passing, setting, defensive skills, hitting and blocking with former NCAA Division I Volleyball Coach Erika Lilley.
Just in time to begin training for fall sports, the City is offering a Championship Football Camp ($115) for football enthusiasts and team hopefuls to get in shape for the season. Hart High School Coach Mike Herrington and his Varsity football staff will instruct the non-contact camp, which teaches participants aged 8-13 the most up-to-date skills and fundamentals of the game
Comprehensive camps are also available this summer. A Youth Sports Performance Clinic ($75) focuses on improving strength, speed, energy, agility, power, flexibility, balance and endurance. The camp will be held three times throughout the summer, for participants to get the most out of their workouts.
