City of Santa Clarita Honored with Prestigious 2008 Los Angeles Architectural Award
Project Team Recognized For World-Class Design and Enhancing the Urban Fabric of Los Angeles
The City of Santa Clarita was recently honored with a Los Angeles Architectural Award of Excellence for the Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility for outstanding architecture in the Civic Sustainability category. Hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC), the 38th annual awards ceremony brought together more than 800 world renowned architects, community leaders, designers, contractors and real estate professionals to acknowledge and celebrate the most laudable new projects in Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles Architectural Awards are presented to the project teams whose contributions improve the quality of architecture and enhance the urban fabric of Los Angeles.
Santa Clarita's Transit Maintenance Facility is a high-quality, environmentally sensitive project that uses state-of-the-art energy efficiency and sustainable building methods. The facility is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building by the US Green Building Council in the City.
A few design features that were incorporated in the Transit Maintenance Facility include straw bale insulated exterior walls, under-floor HVAC system through a raised-floor plenum, recycled building materials, and water efficient landscaping.
"The City is extremely honored to be recognized throughout the Los Angeles community for our leadership in sustainable design and proud to showcase our eco-friendly LEED gold certified facility," said Robert Newman, the City's Director of Public Works.
The awards ceremony was held on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The design team the architect, contractor and owner of each winning project was presented a commemorative award certificate at the awards ceremony.
All awardees were selected by a thirteen-member jury of distinguished peers including architects, contractors and developers. To receive an award, projects had to be located within Los Angeles County and completed during 2006 or 2007.
