Santa Clarita's Newhall Community Center Karate Team Earns World Champion Title
This past June, 10 members of the Newhall Community Center's karate team traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete at the 2008 IMAC World Martial Arts Championships. The karate team was victorious and walked away with three first place championships as well as two second place trophies. There were more than two thousand participants in the Championships, traveling in from as far away as England, Canada, Guatemala and Mexico, who exhibited their martial arts skills in this prestigious competition.
The names and ages of the local World Champions for the first place winners are: Zaira Medina, age 18; Cristal Flores, age 12; and Ruben Caldera, an adult competitor, age 44. The second place winners include Nidia Vargas, age 20; and Juan Medina, age 17. Not to be forgotten, there were also members of the Newhall Community Center who placed fourth: They are Karina Ruiz, age 16; Elybeth Cervantes, age 13; Jennifer Perez, age 16; Jonathan Perez, age 11; and Carlos Cazares, age 17.
The Newhall Community Center's karate team is taught by volunteer instructor Dave Moreno, who has coached the award winning team for more than three years. For more information about the Newhall Community Center karate program, contact Efren Galindo, Center Sports Coordinator (661) 286-4006.
