City Focuses on Creating Community for Healthy Kids
Two Fall Events Scheduled to Provide Affordable Health Care to Local Youth
In alliance with the City of Santa Clarita's "Healthy Santa Clarita" motto, the City has joined forces with the Institute for Local Government to promote the "Communities for Healthy Kids" program. The program ensures that all children residing throughout Santa Clarita have access to affordable health insurance through Healthy Families, a low cost insurance program. There are two opportunities to register with Healthy Families. The first Enrollment Day will be at the Newhall Community Center on Saturday, October 4, 2008, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The second Enrollment Day is scheduled for Saturday, November 1, 2008 and will also be held at the Newhall Community Center.
Healthy Families provides health, dental and vision coverage for children and teens who do not have insurance and do not qualify for other assistance programs. Participants can choose from several health, dental and vision insurance plans available in their service area. This insurance program covers most of the cost for visits to doctors, dentists, and specialists, and also contracts with clinics, laboratories, pharmacies and hospitals for low cost children's health care.
"This program provides an essential means of healthcare to our residents who are otherwise unable to provide it for their children," said Councilmember Laurie Ender.
The monthly premium for children is determined by income category, which includes family size, family income, and the health plan chosen. Monthly premiums average between $4 and $15 for each child, up to a maximum of $45 for all children in a family enrolled in the Healthy Families Program.
To qualify and schedule an enrollment appointment or for more information, call Judy Woodworth at the City's Newhall Community Center at (661) 286-4006. The Newhall Community Center is located at 22421 Market Street, behind the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station.
