City Receives Full Funding for Safe Routes to School Program
The City of Santa Clarita has made the Approved Project List for the latest cycle of the Federal Safe Routes to School Program. The Federal Safe Routes to School Program provides funds to the States to substantially improve the ability of primary and middle school students to walk and bicycle to school safely. The City received full funding for the application that was submitted in July.
The City applied under this program and was awarded the entire amount asked of $637,270 to install physical improvements around three elementary schools: Peachland, Mitchell and Rosedell Elementary Schools.
The goal of this project is to design and construct physical improvements in and around the schools in order to reduce the speed of vehicles and increase the visibility of school crossings. The improvements include bulb-outs, speed feedback signs, enhanced crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals, and upgraded school area signage.
"This is our third successful application for infrastructure improvements and makes it a total of $2 million in two years, with 90% or more in Safe Route to School grant money," said Andrew Yi, City Traffic Engineer.
The purpose of the Safe Routes to School Program is to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school. The improvements will make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.
