City Prepares to Drop, Cover and Hold
The City of Santa Clarita will be participating in the upcoming ShakeOut Drill, on Thursday, November 13 at 10:00 a.m. This event will be the largest drill in United States history and is organized to inspire Southern Californians to be prepared for a natural disaster with a Drop, Cover and Hold Drill. Mayor Bob Kellar will be conducting the Shakeout Drill on radio station KHTS AM 1220.
The concept behind the Drop, Cover and Hold routine is that during an earthquake, one should DROP to the floor, COVER under a steady desk or table and HOLD ON to it firmly.
"The City of Santa Clarita's top priority is to be prepared for any type of unexpected natural disaster and to ensure that the residents of the City are prepared as well," said Mayor Bob Kellar.
City staff will be conducting a field operational exercise the same day of the drill to engage in damage assessment and response operations that would be conducted in the event of an earthquake. The scenario that the November 13th event is operating under is that there is a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the San Andreas Fault. The ultimate goal is to elevate community awareness about the catastrophic issues that potentially could occur, and to improve the current level of preparedness.
