College of the Canyons Theatre Department Announces Auditions for 2009-2010 Productions
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — The College of the Canyons Theatre Department is holding auditions for five of next season's biggest productions, which include Broadway, Shakespeare and a variety of other genres.
"We have a very exciting season planned for this year and are hoping for a large turnout at the auditions for all of our productions," said Paul Wickline, chair of the college's theatre department. "We are looking for a talented, multicultural cast for director Randee Trabitz' concept of 'HAIR' and a smaller cast for the powerful drama 'Keely and Du' directed by Susan Hinshaw."
HAIR Taking the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center stage during the month of October, "HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" provides insight into the philosophy of the flower children of the 1960s. The first and most successful of the rock musicals, HAIR has greatly influenced musical theatre for more than 40 years.
Preliminary auditions will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on August 22 and August 29 in the Performing Arts Center's Black Box Theatre. Actors are expected to arrive by noon to complete paperwork and sign up for an audition time slot. Men should learn to sing the song "Hair" and women should learn "Easy to be Hard." All actors auditioning should learn "Aquarius." To prepare, music will be available in Pico Canyon Hall, Room 112 beginning July 13.
Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. on August 31 in the Black Box Theatre. In addition to singing and moving, actors will be asked to read scenes from the script.
Rehearsals will begin at 6:30 p.m. on September 1 and will generally be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day except Saturdays.
KEELY AND DU Jane Martin's "Keely and Du" is about a young woman, Keely, who is kidnapped by a right-to-life organization on her way to an abortion clinic. While being held captive, Keely forms a relationship with Du, the pro-life nurse who looks after her.
Preliminary auditions for the play, which addresses potentially controversial subject matter, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on August 25 and August 26 in the Black Box Theatre, which is where it will be staged during the month of November.
The following roles are available: "Du" (motherly/grandmotherly woman, mature, must be older than Keely), "Keely" (in her 20s or 30s, strong, spirited, almost broken waitress and cashier), "Walter" (mature man, pastor, leader, fatherly, must be older than Keely), "Cole" (in his 20s or 30s, blue collar, uneducated, engaging and charismatic), "Prison Guard" (female) and two to three "orderlies" (non-speaking roles).
Those auditioning are strongly encouraged to prepare a monologue (modern or contemporary) that best showcases their abilities. If students do not have an audition monologue, a piece will be provided for the actor.
Actors will have three minutes to present audition material. Auditions will be closed and only one actor will be allowed in the Black Box, at a time.
Callbacks will be at 6:30 p.m. on August 27 at the Black Box. Cold readings (scenes from the plays) will be used.
Rehearsals will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays beginning September.
ADDITIONAL PRODUCTIONS "Delightful Disorientation: The World According to David Ives" is a handpicked selection of contemporary playwright David Ives' best one-act plays which include "The Philadelphia" (three chimpanzees attempt to write "Hamlet") and "Time Flies" (two mayflies are burdened with the knowledge of their own mortality). The plays will be staged at the Black Box Theatre from April 14 to April 18.
Nothing will be quite how it seems when lovers cross with mischievous spirits in the magical forest of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," on the PAC main stage on May 21 and May 22.
The 10th annual New Works Festival will return to the Black Box Theatre from April 28 to May 2. Open to the Santa Clarita Valley community and beyond, the festival takes works in progress from unheralded playwrights and brings them to life.
Auditions for "Delightful Disorientation," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the New Works Festival will be held at 6:30 p.m. on February 16 and February 17 in the Black Box Theatre. Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. on February 18.
Anyone cast for these shows will need to enroll in Theatre 190.
Auditions are open to both COC students and community members. All ages and ethnicities will be considered.
