Trevor Bloom and Trevor McDonald Top All-Conference Awards
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. After winning its second consecutive Western State Conference, South Division title, the College of the Canyons baseball team collected 17 all-conference awards, including Player of the Year honors for Trevor Bloom, Pitcher of the Year for Trevor McDonald and Coach of the Year for Chris Cota.
Sophomore Bloom joined the Cougars after spending his freshman season at New Mexico State University. The right fielder led the team with a .388 batting average, 43 runs scored, 66 hits, three triples, eight home runs, 52 runs batted in and 26 walks. He started all 41 games that he played in and committed just three errors.
This is the second consecutive year that a COC athlete has been the recipient of the Player of the Year award. Brian Hernandez earned the honor last season.
Valencia High School alum McDonald was the Cougars' steady hurler during the season, finishing with a perfect 8-0 record, which tied former Cougar pitcher and now Oakland Athletics starter Dana Eveland for wins in a season. McDonald's win-loss record also moved him into third place in the Cougar record books. The freshman had a 3.52 ERA in 14 appearances. In 84.1 innings of work, he gave up 94 hits and 15 walks while striking out 42 batters. McDonald is COC's first Pitcher of the Year award winner since the conference began bestowing the honor in 2007.
Cota, in his ninth season as head coach and 19th year with the program, earned his fourth Coach of the Year award after guiding the Cougars to back-to-back conference championships. As a COC player, he starred on the 1986 team that won the state title.
