Regional Group Adopts 20 Year Plan for Santa Clarita Valley Water Resources
NEWS FACTS
• Exactly one week after State Department of Water Resources Director Lester Snow publicly awarded $25 million to water resource planners of the Greater Los Angeles County Region, agencies within the Upper Santa Clara River Region formally adopted their own Integrated Regional Water Management Plan on July 30 at the Castaic Lake Water Agency.
• Adoption of the Upper Santa Clara River IRWMP is the culmination of a year-long stakeholder process. Input on the plan was solicited from residents and organizations within Santa Clarita, Acton, Agua Dulce, Castaic, West Ranch, and their adjoining communities.
• The IRWMP is a long-term planning document with the goals of addressing regional water supply needs, protecting and improving water quality, providing flood protection, and protecting the environment. Among the projects included in the IRWMP are plans for recycled water distribution, floodplain acquisition, a discovery park and nature center, and removal of non-native plant species. These projects will likely be joined by new concepts and plans as Santa Clarita Valley residents and other regional partners identify needs.
• IRWMP adoption allows regions to apply for Proposition 84 state grant funding. Proposition 84 authorizes $5.4 billion to fund projects relating to safe drinking water, water quality and supply, flood control, waterway and natural resource protection, water pollution and contamination control, state and local park improvements, public access in natural resources, and conservation efforts.
ABOUT THE SANTA CLARA RIVER WATERSHED
The Santa Clara River is the largest river system in southern California that remains in a relatively natural state. The river originates in the northern slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains in north Los Angeles County, traverses in a westerly direction into Ventura county and discharges into the Pacific Ocean. The river runs approximately 100 miles from its headwater near Acton to its outlet, the ocean, and drains an area approximately 1,634 square miles. Approximately forty percent of the watershed is contained in Los Angeles County and 60 percent in Ventura County. Visit the Upper Santa Clara River IRWMP web site at scrwaterplan.org.
