Bereavement Support Group Aids Healing Process
Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital hosts a Bereavement Support Group for those who are mourning and grieving the death of a loved one
(VALENCIA, CA) — Grief is a normal reaction to the loss of someone who has been significant in your life. And although grief is a necessary process to help one adjust to a loss, it's not a process that has to be endured alone. For that reason, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital is hosting a Bereavement Support Group to help all those who are mourning and grieving the death of a loved one to begin the healing process.
"Although everyone experiences grief, each person responds differently to the death of someone who has been important to them," explains Margery Link, chaplain/pastoral care coordinator at Henry Mayo.
The first gathering will be held on Wednesday, July 9 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, in the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation, room #4. Groups will then continue to meet every Wednesday at the same time, continuing for a total of six sessions.
Facilitated by the VITAS Innovative Hospice Care Bereavement team, the series of six sessions are offered to adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The purpose of the group is to offer a safe environment for people to share their feelings, discuss their fears, learn more about the bereavement period, and begin the healing process. Some of the topics to be explored include:
  • The four tasks of mourning
  • Factors that make the grief experience unique
  • Typical myths about grief and mourning
  • Ways to help you heal from the pain of loss
  • The grieving person's "Bill of Rights"
  • Feelings and reactions to a significant loss
  • How to handle special days and holidays
"Grief is a journey you do not have to travel alone, and it isn't a problem to be cured," says Marjorie Clark-Dunn, M.Div., Bereavement Services Manager at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care. "We encourage survivors, caregivers, family and friends to attend the support group in order to receive guidance and share feelings with others who face the same or similar challenges."
Admission is free, but reservations are required. For further information or pre-registration please contact Marjorie Clark-Dunn at 818-971-3437.
